Is it over for Christian media?

2009 June 5

That is the question posed in a Newsweek article written by Lisa Miller. It seems that there are several prominent evangelical Christian print organizations that are closing their doors or are no longer printing a hard copy but just appearing online. This is not just a Christian media phenomena. All print media is in trouble as these organizations seek to find a working model in this changing world of media saturation. Even some Baptist state papers are experiencing difficulties as subscriptions decline. Also, consider that NAMB sold FamilyNet to InTouch Ministries.

The article is also interesting to read as Miller points to a disappearing wall of separation between the secular and the sacred. She writes that evangelical Christian parents for instance, look to secular as well as biblical sources for advice on child rearing. Also, it is not uncommon now for books that are considered Christian to appear on secular best seller lists. The Christian movies “Facing the Giants” and “Fireproof” were box office successes.

I just cannot help but wonder if Miller is on to something. There is no longer seems to be any way to tell a secular person from an evangelical person. Are we as Christians losing our saltiness and is our light dimming?

What do you think?
