Are We Losing Our Religion?

Filed under: News, SBC, SCBC, church, megachurch — Tags: , , , , , , — Quinn Hooks @ 4:12 pm

This past Monday, the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life released an enlightening survey of 35,000 American adults concerning their religious affiliations and beliefs. The results are interesting to note as we journey onward into the future.

Consider these findings from the article:

  • The U.S. Religious Landscape Survey estimates the United States is 78 percent Christian and about to lose its status as a majority Protestant nation, at 51 percent and slipping.
  • More than one-quarter of American adults have left the faith of their childhood for another religion or no religion at all, the survey found. Factoring in moves from one stream or denomination of Protestantism to another, the number rises to 44 percent.
  • One in four adults ages 18 to 29 claim no affiliation with a religious institution.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Ginsu slices, it dices, and it could soon help you get from here to there.

A state lawmaker recently proposed naming a quarter-mile road “Ginsu Way” to honor the Rhode Islanders who slapped a faux-Japanese name onto a cheap serrated knife and used TV infomercials to turn it into a ubiquitous brand parodied by Saturday Night Live. [...]

Maybe we can get the Ronco Showtime Rotisserie and BBQ highway here in South Carolina! If we act now we can get it for $400 $200 $100 $19.95!

Please Call Your Representative

Please call your senator before next Tuesday, Feb. 26, and ask him/her to vote NO on S 732 and S 967. Here is the information concerning these bills sent in an email by Joe Mack.

Background on S 732 and S 967

Since the inception of the State lottery, more and more gambling venues keep trying to get a toehold with an eye toward expansion in South Carolina. Recently two bills have been introduced that will allow nonprofit organizations to hold card and dice games. Secular media has reported that the bills allow “churches to gamble.” The nonprofit organizations include churches, schools, community groups, fraternal groups, veteran groups and more. And they allow poker, casino type games and raffles.

In a state where unemployment is on the rise, people are losing their houses due to non-payment of mortgages, national construction companies are halting building projects and criminal domestic violence is most often caused by financial stressors, it is irresponsible to throw gas on this fire.

I believe that these bills will do more harm than good. I have been disappointed that the media has neglected to report that the types of nonprofit organizations far exceed churches. I believe that if these bills pass, the great majority of organizations using these gambing loopholes will be groups other than churches.

Christians, community leaders and elected officials are responsible for protecting the most vulnerable citizens from all manner of harm. We are supposed to be exemplary models for our children. What example are we then setting if we sponsor and encourage gambling in our churches, schools, veterans’ organizations, country clubs, fire houses, police stations, etc., etc., etc.? We must not be responsible for leading children, young adults and problem gamblers down this slippery path.

Creativity is a wonderful thing that will be deprived of many of our citizens if we continue to jump to the thought of easy money through gambling, even for charitable organizations.

If your senator is on the Judiciary Committee, please call and ask him/her to vote NO to S 732 and S 967. Click on the senator’s name to link to their contact information.

A Thought for Feb 22, 2008

Watching the lunar eclipse the other night and beholding the beauty of the heavenly skies set me to thinking about the wonder of creation. I looked at the expanse of the heavens and thought of the psalmist who wrote:

When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,

what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?

I thought of how the same hands that placed each star in its place in the sky were pierced for my sins and one day those same hands will wipe away all tears.

30 Day Sex Challenge?

I heard about this on the local news so I did a web search on this subject and found many articles plus videos of the interview with the pastor. It seems that Pastor Paul Wirth of the Relevant Church is concerned about the high divorce rate and thinks that more sex is the answer. Here is the article from the TampaBay1o.com. In another article, Wirth shares that his studies in the teachings of Jesus indicated that Jesus frowned on premarital sex. There is even a special channel on Youtube to check out this church and this challenge. Here is the CNN coverage of the challenge.

It seems Wirth that the answer to marital problems is more sex. This represents the Americanization of Christianity in which everything revolves around sex. Having watched the videos on Youtube, I found them well acted and produced but giving the same advice I would find watching an episode of Dr. Phil or Oprah. Actually, the Discovery Health Channel offers similar advice. I am glad that Pastor Wirth is encouraging singles to avoid sex for 30 days. However, would it not be better to point out to singles and married people that Jesus says to look upon a woman with lust is committing the act of adultery and adulterers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Would that too negatively impact the worship attendance? In the end, this challenge deals with a symptom rather than the illness. The illness is sin and it is terminal. Of course, what do I know? I’m just an old fashioned preacher.

Bowling for Ballots?

Mike Huckabee was in Wisconsin after having been in the Cayman Islands for a week to give a speech.  CNN political Ticker has more of this story.  I do find it ironic that in the interview that Mrs. Huckabee shared that her maiden name was McCain.
